1. Best Things to Do in Wisconsin Dells
Wisconsin Dells has enough variety to keep families busy for several days. You can spend one day at a waterpark, another exploring the sandstone cliffs along the Wisconsin River, and a third checking out the area’s amusement parks and outdoor attractions.
Here are some of the experiences I’d put on your list.

1. Take an Upper Dells Boat Tour
Best for: Scenic views, families, photography, and learning about local history.
One of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of Wisconsin Dells is from the water.
During our trip, we took the Upper Dells Boat Tour, a leisurely excursion past the area’s distinctive sandstone formations. Along the way, our guide shared information about the rock formations and the history of the region.
The tour also included two shore landings, giving us the opportunity to explore places we couldn’t fully appreciate from the boat.
Explore Witches Gulch
Witches Gulch was one of the highlights of our boat tour. After stepping off the boat, we followed a boardwalk through a narrow canyon surrounded by towering rock walls.
Along the way, we saw the Witches Bathtub, Witches Waterfall, and Witches Window. The canyon’s narrow passages and clear water made it a memorable stop for our family.
Visit Stand Rock
Our second landing was Stand Rock, a formation made famous by photographer H.H. Bennett in the 1800s. The area played an important role in early action photography and helped draw attention to the region’s unusual sandstone landscape.
My take: If you’re visiting Wisconsin Dells for the first time, I’d put a scenic boat tour near the top of your list. It’s a different experience from the waterparks and gives you a better appreciation of the natural landscape that made the Dells famous.

2. Spend a Day at Mount Olympus Water and Theme Park
Best for: Families who want water slides, amusement rides, and plenty of action.
Mount Olympus combines a waterpark with a theme park, making it an option for families who want more than swimming during their Wisconsin Dells vacation.
When we visited, my son enjoyed the kid-friendly rides and the World Go-Kart Track, which travels through a tunnel. We also spent plenty of time in the waterpark.
The Lost City of Atlantis offered interactive water play, while the Great Pool of Delphi provided a large swimming area with kid-friendly features. We also floated along the River Troy lazy river.
One of the more memorable experiences was Poseidon’s Rage, a wave pool with powerful waves. These waves can knock you off balance, so stay close to younger children and follow the park’s safety instructions.
Dad’s tip: Check ride height requirements, operating schedules, and ticket options before your visit. Prices and available attractions can vary by season.

3. Discover the Attractions Along Downtown Broadway
Best for: Families looking for something to do outside the waterparks.
Downtown Wisconsin Dells offers a change of pace from the resorts. You can walk along Broadway, browse shops, stop for a snack, and try some of the area’s unusual attractions.
During our visit, we stopped at the Museum of Root Beer, where the kids enjoyed trying different root beers. We also visited Dells Mining Co., where they panned for rocks.
Other attractions we checked out included Ripley’s Believe It or Not! and Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf.
Pirate’s Cove was a fun way to finish our downtown outing. Its themed courses feature caves and waterfalls, making mini-golf more interesting than a simple putting course.
Dad’s tip: You don’t need to plan a full day around downtown. Combine a walk along Broadway with lunch, mini-golf, and a few attractions before heading back to your resort.

4. Try the Activities at Kalahari Resort
Best for: Families who want waterparks and indoor entertainment in one place.
Kalahari is more than an indoor waterpark.
Outside the waterpark, Tom Foolerys Adventure Park offers go-karts, mini-golf, laser tag, a ropes course, a Ferris wheel, and other indoor attractions.
You can also find arcade games, bowling, dining, and spa services, making it possible to spend several days at the resort without running out of activities.
Dad’s tip: If you’re staying overnight, look into the available attraction passes and compare the cost with paying for activities individually. Also consider how far your room is from the main attractions.

2. Wisconsin Dells Waterparks and Resorts
For many families, the waterparks are the main reason to visit Wisconsin Dells. The good news is that you don’t have to limit your vacation to summer.
Indoor waterparks make Wisconsin Dells a year-round destination, while outdoor waterparks add even more options during the warmer months.
Kalahari Resort
Best for: Families who want a large indoor waterpark with a large wave pool and additional entertainment.
Kalahari is a strong choice if you want to combine waterslides and swimming with other activities. The resort’s Tom Foolerys Adventure Park, arcade, bowling, and dining options give families plenty to do outside the water.
One thing I appreciated during our stay was the variety of activities available for different ages. My son could enjoy the waterpark and adventure attractions, while I could take breaks between activities.
The resort also offers waterslides, a wave pool, a lazy river, the FlowRider surfing attraction, and plenty of additional activities.
My son and I enjoyed the FlowRider, although he was better at bodyboarding than I was. We also spent time in the wave pool and floated along the lazy river.
We stayed in the Hillside area. Although it meant a longer walk to the main resort attractions, our room had a good amount of space and useful amenities.
Kalahari is worth considering if your family likes having lots of entertainment in one location.

Wilderness Resort
Best for: Families looking for multiple waterparks and an indoor winter getaway.
Wilderness Resort is a sprawling property with several lodging areas and a collection of indoor and outdoor waterparks.
We stayed at Glacier Canyon Lodge during winter, when the outdoor waterparks were closed. Even then, we had plenty to do inside.
The Wild WaterDome features a transparent roof that brings natural light into the indoor waterpark, along with a large wave pool and play areas for younger children.
Klondike Kavern has a lazy river, slides, and an interactive children’s play area. The Wild West Waterpark adds more indoor slides and attractions.
Beyond the waterparks, families can find arcades, indoor mini-golf, go-karts, climbing walls, laser tag, and other activities.
Dad’s tip: Wilderness is a large resort, so pay attention to where your room is located. We were near a skywalk and used it to reach the waterparks, but you’ll want to plan for walking or using the shuttle when necessary.

Which Wisconsin Dells Resort Should You Choose?
| Resort | Best for | What stands out |
|---|---|---|
| Kalahari Resort | Families who want varied entertainment | Indoor waterpark and Tom Foolerys Adventure Park |
| Wilderness Resort | Families who want multiple waterpark areas | Several indoor waterparks and extensive resort grounds |
| Staybridge Suites Wisconsin Dells–Lake Delton | Families who prefer a hotel-style stay | Suite-style accommodations and kitchen space |
The right choice depends on your budget, the ages of your kids, and whether you want to spend most of your time at the resort or explore the area.
If you’re planning to spend most of your vacation in the waterpark, compare the lodging package and included admission. If you want to see the natural attractions and downtown, a separate hotel may give you more flexibility.
3. Best Outdoor Adventures Near Wisconsin Dells
Wisconsin Dells isn’t just about indoor waterparks and amusement rides. The surrounding region also has scenic parks, hiking trails, and natural landscapes worth exploring.

Parfrey’s Glen State Natural Area
Best for: Families who enjoy rocky trails, streams, and canyon scenery.
On our third day, we visited Parfrey’s Glen State Natural Area. This hike follows a stream through a narrow canyon, with rocky terrain, small rapids, and a waterfall near the back of the gorge.
The trail begins relatively easily, but the terrain becomes more challenging as you move farther into the canyon. We crossed the stream in several places and watched the water flow around rocks and fallen logs.
My son and the other kids enjoyed climbing around the rocks and exploring the canyon. We eventually turned around rather than continuing too far.
Important: This is a natural area, not a paved family walking path. Rocks can be slippery, creek crossings can be difficult, and the route becomes rougher farther into the canyon. Check current conditions before visiting and don’t attempt crossings when water levels are unsafe.

Ochsner Park Zoo
Best for: A relaxed family stop, particularly with younger children.
After our hike, we stopped at Ochsner Park Zoo in nearby Baraboo. The kids enjoyed seeing animals, including prairie dogs, bears, emus, and otters. Feeding the goats was another highlight.
It was a nice way to finish our outdoor outing without adding another demanding activity to the day.
Check the zoo’s current operating information before visiting, since admission arrangements and schedules can change.

4. More Family-Friendly Activities in Wisconsin Dells
You don’t have to spend every hour at a waterpark. Here are some additional activities to consider when planning your trip.

Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf
This themed mini-golf destination has multiple courses featuring waterfalls and caves. We visited after exploring downtown, making it an easy addition to the day.
It’s a good option when you want an activity that doesn’t require a full-day commitment.
Museum of Root Beer
If your family likes trying unusual drinks, stop here to explore root beer varieties and browse the gift shop. During our visit, we tried a root beer flight rather than touring the museum itself.
Dells Mining Co.
Kids can try panning for rocks and minerals. Different options are available depending on what you want to find, so check the current offerings and prices before going.

Buffalo Phil’s Pizza & Grille
We enjoyed a meal at Buffalo Phil’s, where a model train delivers food to the table. The restaurant also has themed displays and is connected to Knuckleheads, an indoor entertainment center with activities such as bowling, go-karts, and arcade games.
It’s an entertaining meal option when you’re traveling with kids.

Mount Horeb Troll Hunt
If you’re driving to or from Wisconsin Dells via southern Wisconsin, consider a stop in Mount Horeb. We explored the town’s troll statues, which gave the kids a fun scavenger-hunt-style activity.
It’s not in Wisconsin Dells itself, so treat it as an optional road-trip stop rather than part of your main Dells itinerary.

5. A 3-Day Wisconsin Dells Itinerary
If you’re visiting for a long weekend, you can combine the waterparks with natural attractions and time downtown.
Here’s how we approached our trip, with a few ideas for adapting it to your family.
Day 1: Scenic Boat Tour and Downtown Wisconsin Dells
Morning: Take the Upper Dells Boat Tour and explore Witches Gulch and Stand Rock.
Lunch: Stop at Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co. for pizza and a family-friendly meal.
Afternoon: Walk downtown Broadway, visit the Museum of Root Beer, try Dells Mining Co., or explore Ripley’s Believe It or Not!
Evening: Play a round of mini-golf at Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf before returning to your hotel.
Day 2: Waterpark and Amusement Park Fun
Morning: Head to Mount Olympus Water and Theme Park for rides, waterslides, and family attractions.
Afternoon: Spend more time at the waterpark, relax by the pool, or choose a few rides that suit your kids’ ages and interests.
Evening: Eat at Buffalo Phil’s Pizza & Grille and consider adding another indoor activity at Knuckleheads.
If you’d rather spend your vacation at a single resort, you could dedicate this day to Kalahari or Wilderness instead.

Day 3: Hiking and Outdoor Exploration
Morning: Visit Parfrey’s Glen State Natural Area for a rocky canyon hike.
Lunch: Head to Baraboo for a meal at a local restaurant.
Afternoon: Visit Ochsner Park Zoo before starting your drive home.
This itinerary balances the major attractions with time outdoors. You can switch the order around depending on weather, operating schedules, and how much time your family wants to spend at the waterparks.

6. Visiting Wisconsin Dells in Winter
Wisconsin Dells can be a great winter destination because indoor waterparks let families enjoy a swimming vacation even when it’s cold outside.
During our winter stay at Wilderness Resort, we visited the indoor waterparks while the outdoor areas were closed. The Wild WaterDome, Klondike Kavern, and Wild West Waterpark gave us plenty of ways to spend time in the water.
Kalahari is another option for a winter getaway, with its indoor waterpark and indoor entertainment at Tom Foolerys Adventure Park.
Winter Waterpark Tips
- Pack a separate waterpark bag. Keep swimsuits, water shoes, and a change of clothes easy to reach.
- Check your resort’s layout. Some lodging areas require a longer walk or a shuttle ride to reach the waterparks.
- Look at what’s included. Waterpark access, attraction passes, and other benefits vary by lodging package and resort.
- Plan for indoor activities beyond swimming. Bowling, arcades, mini-golf, and other attractions can fill the gaps between waterpark sessions.
- Check seasonal schedules. Individual attractions may have different hours or closures during quieter periods.
Winter is also a good time to explore downtown, enjoy a meal, or visit an indoor attraction without spending your entire trip in the water.

7. Where to Stay in Wisconsin Dells
Your lodging choice can shape the entire vacation. Some families want a resort where they can walk to the waterpark, while others prefer a separate hotel with more room and flexibility.
Staybridge Suites Wisconsin Dells–Lake Delton
We chose Staybridge Suites for our three-night trip because we were traveling as two families and wanted additional living space. The suite-style layout gave us a separate bedroom and kitchen area, which made it easier to spread out.
The hotel also offered a pool, whirlpool, basketball court, and outdoor courtyard.
Best for: Families who want more space and plan to visit attractions around Wisconsin Dells rather than spend every hour at a single resort.

Kalahari Resort
Kalahari is worth considering if you want waterpark access and plenty of entertainment in one location. We stayed in the Hillside, which offered a comfortable room but required a longer walk to the main resort attractions.
Best for: Families who want a waterpark-centered vacation with additional indoor activities.
Glacier Canyon Lodge at Wilderness Resort
We stayed at Glacier Canyon Lodge during winter. The skywalk made it easier to reach the waterparks, although the resort’s large size meant walking was still part of the experience.
Best for: Families who want access to Wilderness Resort’s indoor waterparks and a range of additional attractions.
My advice: Compare the total cost of a resort stay with a separate hotel. Consider room size, included waterpark admission, parking, resort fees, food costs, and the distance you’ll need to walk to attractions.
8. Tips for Planning Your Wisconsin Dells Vacation
A little planning can help you get more out of your visit without overloading the schedule.
Decide What Kind of Vacation You Want
If the waterparks are your main priority, consider staying at Kalahari or Wilderness. If you want to explore downtown, hike, and take a boat tour, a hotel outside the main resort complexes may offer more flexibility.
Allow Enough Time for the Waterparks
Indoor waterparks can easily fill an entire day. If you’re traveling with kids, avoid packing too many additional activities into the same day.
Check Hours and Ticket Prices
Waterpark hours, outdoor attraction schedules, admission prices, and package details can change throughout the year. Verify current information directly with each attraction before traveling.
Plan Around Your Kids’ Ages
Some attractions have height or age requirements. Check the restrictions before buying passes so you can prioritize activities everyone in your family can enjoy.
Bring the Right Gear
Pack swimsuits, water shoes, extra clothes, and a bag for wet items. If you’re hiking, bring sturdy footwear and check the trail conditions before setting out.
Don’t Overlook the Natural Attractions
The boat tours and canyon landscapes are a big part of what makes Wisconsin Dells distinctive. Even if you’re visiting primarily for the waterparks, try to leave time for at least one outdoor adventure.
9. Frequently Asked Questions About Wisconsin Dells
