Electricity: Adapting Your Plug-Ins In Europe

When we travel to Europe we will need a travel adapter and converters for our electronic devices to plug them in. Voltage and outlet types vary in different countries. In the US electricity runs on 110-220 volts, while other countries, such as European ones, run on 220-440 volts.

Travel Adapter

What is a travel adapter or plug adapter?

The plug adapter allows you to plug your device into foreign outlets, but it does not convert the power supply coming from the outlet. You should check your device before plugging it in to see if it is dual-voltage. I looked on my computer plug-in and found the voltage information 120-220 volts, which means that it is dual voltage, that means I only need a plug adapter for it. My ipad and iphone will work with only a plug adapter since it also takes between 110-240 volts.

Converter

What is a voltage converter?

The converter can be used for irons, hair dryers or electronic toothbrushes, it should not be used for electronics that need continuous electric, such as computer.

Transformers

What are transformers?

These are step up from converters and are more expensive. They can be used continuously for many days. Computers are an example of this, unless, like my Mac, it is dual-voltage, and then it is fine. Many newer computers will not need the transformer.

UK Plug-In

Is Great Britain different?

Plugs in Great Britain have three long, flat prongs with an occasional third round one. A good way to have an adapter work in multiple countries is having a universal adapter.
